Please note: Conversions use the exact international factor of 0.45359237 kg per pound, so the arithmetic carries no uncertainty of its own. Round once at the end, and always write the unit alongside the number. This calculator is free and provided without warranty — see our terms of use.
1 kg = 2.20462 lbs. 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg. To convert kg to lbs, multiply the kilogram figure by 2.20462262185. To convert lbs to kg, multiply the pound figure by 0.45359237. So 10 kg into lbs is 22.05 pounds, and 10 lbs into kg is 4.54 kilograms. The converter above does it either way, instantly, free, with nothing to install and nothing stored.

What This Site Does
There is one calculation at the heart of this entire site, and you have already seen it: multiply kilograms by 2.20462 and you get pounds. That is genuinely all there is to the arithmetic. What takes up the remaining hundred and twenty pages is everything around it — the situations where the number matters, the places people get it wrong, and the context that turns a figure into a decision.
Because a conversion is rarely just a conversion. Someone converting 23 kg to pounds is standing at a check-in desk. Someone converting 3.4 kg is telling a relative about a birth. Someone converting 680 kg is loading a pallet and needs to know whether the racking will take it. The multiplication is identical in all three cases; the thing you need to know alongside it is completely different.
So this site is organised around those situations rather than around the maths. Find the page that matches your circumstance and you get the conversion plus the context: the standard baggage limits, the pounds-and-ounces breakdown, the racking capacities. If you only want the number, the calculator at the top of this page is the fastest route and you can close the tab with our blessing.
The Formula, Written Out Properly
Both directions, at full precision:
Pounds = Kilograms × 2.20462262185
Kilograms = Pounds × 0.45359237
Those two constants are exact reciprocals of one another, which is the signature of a properly defined conversion rather than an approximation. One divided by 0.45359237 gives 2.20462262185 precisely. If you ever meet a conversion table where the two directions do not reverse cleanly, it has rounded somewhere it should not have.
The reason the figures are exact rather than measured is worth knowing. In 1959 the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa signed the International Yard and Pound Agreement, which defined the international avoirdupois pound as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms. Before that, the American and British pounds differed very slightly. Since then they have been identical, and the conversion has been a matter of definition rather than of measurement.

Converting Without a Calculator
Two shortcuts cover almost every situation where you need an answer before you can reach a phone.
Kilograms to pounds: double it, then add ten percent
Take the kilogram figure, double it, then add ten percent of the original number. For 45 kg: doubling gives 90, ten percent of 45 is 4.5, and the total is 94.5 lbs. The true answer is 99.21 lbs, so you are about five percent low. Add a second ten percent — another 4.5 — and you reach 99, which is close enough for almost anything spoken aloud.
Pounds to kilograms: halve it, then take off ten percent
Halve the pound figure, then subtract ten percent of that half. For 160 lbs: half is 80, ten percent of 80 is 8, and 80 minus 8 gives 72 kg. The true answer is 72.57 kg. This shortcut is unusually good — it lands within one percent almost every time.
Both methods are for conversation, not paperwork. The moment a number is going to be written down, typed into a form, or used to calculate something else, use the converter and the full factor.
The Mistakes That Cause Almost All the Trouble
- Converting the wrong way. Multiplying pounds by 2.20462 instead of by 0.453592 produces an answer nearly five times too large. If your result seems implausible, this is the first thing to check.
- Reading a comma as a decimal point. Much of continental Europe writes 2,5 kg where Britain and America write 2.5 kg. Copying a figure across that boundary without noticing has caused real shipping incidents.
- Saying ton without saying which. A metric tonne is 1000 kg, a US short ton is 907.18 kg, and a UK long ton is 1016.05 kg. Three different quantities, one word.
- Mistaking stones for pounds. A stone is 14 pounds. Reading 11 st 4 lb as 11.4 lb is out by a factor of fourteen.
- Rounding too early. Round once, at the end. Rounding at each intermediate step is how several individually reasonable decisions produce a wrong answer.
- Using 2.2 on large quantities. Fine for a bag of apples, out by 46 lbs on ten tonnes.
How These Figures Are Checked
The conversion factor is not ours to choose. It comes from the 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement and is published identically by the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the International Bureau of Weights and Measures. Every numeric value in every table on this site is calculated from that constant rather than copied from another website, which avoids inheriting somebody else's rounding decision.
The calculator itself is tested in both directions against known values before publication, including the round-trip check: convert a figure to pounds, convert the answer back, and confirm you land on the original number. Real-world figures quoted alongside the conversions — baggage limits, bag sizes, typical weights — reflect widely published industry norms rather than any single vendor's specification, and pages are reviewed on a rolling schedule.
If something here looks wrong, we would genuinely rather know. Write to team@convertkgtolbs.com and a person will look at it.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert kg to lbs?
Multiply the kilogram figure by 2.20462262185. So 10 kg becomes 22.05 lbs. For a rough answer in your head, double the kilograms and add ten percent.
How many pounds are in a kilogram?
2.20462262185 pounds. Most charts round this to 2.2046, and casual conversation rounds it to 2.2, which is about 0.21 percent low.
What is 1 lb in kg?
Exactly 0.45359237 kilograms. This is a defined value fixed by the International Yard and Pound Agreement of 1959, not a measurement.
Is a kilogram heavier than a pound?
Yes, considerably. One kilogram is about 2.2 times heavier than one pound. Put another way, a pound is a little under half a kilogram.
What is the formula for kg into pounds?
Pounds = kilograms × 2.20462262185. The reverse is kilograms = pounds × 0.45359237. The two factors are exact reciprocals.
Is the converter free?
Entirely. There is no account, no fee, no limit and no advertising interruption. Type a number and read the answer.
Does the site store what I type?
No. The calculation runs in your own browser using local JavaScript. Nothing is sent to a server and nothing is saved.
Can I use it offline?
Once the page has loaded, yes. The maths happens locally, so you only need a connection to open the page.
Why do lbs and kg both exist?
History. The pound descends from the Roman libra and grew through centuries of English trade. The kilogram was designed deliberately in 1790s France. Both survive because habits outlast legislation.
Do the US and UK pound differ?
Not since 1959. Both use the international avoirdupois pound of exactly 0.45359237 kg. Tons, gallons and fluid ounces do still differ between the two.
What is 70 kg in pounds?
154.32 lbs, which is also 11 stone 0.3 pounds. It is a common average adult body weight and one of the most searched conversions on this site.
What is 100 kg in lbs?
220.46 lbs. It is the round metric benchmark, and it sits just above the 200 lb mark that many people use as their imperial equivalent.
How do I convert kg to stones and pounds?
Convert to pounds first by multiplying by 2.20462, then divide that figure by 14. The whole number is stones and the remainder is the leftover pounds.
What does lb stand for?
The Latin libra pondo, meaning a pound by weight. The abbreviation comes from libra, which is also the origin of the pound sterling symbol.
Is 2.2 accurate enough?
For conversation, yes. For anything written down — shipping, dosing, trade documents — use 2.20462, because the shorthand drifts noticeably above about 50 kg.
How many grams in a pound?
453.59237 grams. It is the same defined figure as 0.45359237 kg with the decimal point moved three places.
How many ounces in a kilogram?
35.274 ounces, since there are 16 ounces in a pound and 2.20462 pounds in a kilogram.
What is a metric tonne in pounds?
2204.62 lbs. Do not confuse it with a US short ton of 2000 lbs or a UK long ton of 2240 lbs — all three are called tons in speech.
Can I check the converter is right?
Yes, and it is a good habit. Convert 100 kg to pounds, then convert the result back. If you do not land on 100 kg, the tool is rounding carelessly. This one returns it exactly.
Does gravity affect the conversion?
No. Kilograms and pounds are both units of mass, and the ratio between them is fixed. Gravity affects what a scale senses, not the arithmetic between the two units.
Why is the kilogram the only base unit with a prefix?
A quirk of history. The gram was originally intended as the base unit but proved impractically small, so the kilogram took over while keeping the prefixed name.
When was the kilogram redefined?
On 20 May 2019, when it was tied to the Planck constant instead of a platinum-iridium cylinder kept near Paris since 1889.
Do I need to round before converting?
No, and you should not. Enter your figure exactly as you have it and round only the final answer. Rounding first bakes an error into everything downstream.
What is the quickest mental method?
Double the kilograms, then add ten percent of the original number. For 40 kg: 80 plus 4 gives 84 lbs against a true 88.18 lbs. Add a second ten percent for a closer estimate.
Can I convert very large numbers?
Yes. The relationship is linear, so a container load of 20,000 kg converts with exactly the same reliability as a 2 kg parcel.
Does the tool handle decimals?
Fully. Enter 3.475 or 0.008 and it converts at full precision, displaying two decimals while retaining ten behind the scenes.
What browsers work?
Any current browser on any device. The calculator uses standard JavaScript with no unusual requirements and no external dependencies.
Is there an app to download?
No, and there does not need to be. The page is lightweight enough to load instantly and works offline once open.
Which countries use kilograms?
Effectively all of them. The United States is the main holdout for everyday use, while Myanmar and Liberia are the other commonly cited exceptions, and even the US uses metric in science and medicine.
Why does the UK use both?
Metrication in Britain was never completed for personal weight. Shops sell in kilograms, people describe themselves in stones and pounds, and scales sold there usually offer all three.
Where does the conversion factor come from?
The 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement, signed by the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, which fixed the pound at exactly 0.45359237 kg.
Who maintains this site?
A small editorial team that builds and verifies calculators. Every tool is tested against known values before publication and rechecked on a rolling schedule.

In Short
Multiply kilograms by 2.20462 for pounds. Multiply pounds by 0.453592 for kilograms. Those two numbers have been fixed by international agreement since 1959 and will not change in your lifetime, which makes this one of the few things on the internet you can rely on without checking twice.
For the official definitions and the standards work behind them, the primary source is the NIST Office of Weights and Measures. It is the single external link on this page, chosen because it is where the numbers actually come from.
