Check it against a second source, because that is what you would do with any single tool, ours included.

Nothing here is medical, veterinary, legal, financial or engineering advice. Pages touching on health, dosing, animal care or structural loads convert units and give general context only. Decisions in those areas belong to a qualified professional who knows the specifics of your situation.

Acceptable Use

We have tried to write these to be read instead, because a free reference tool does not need six thousand words of protective drafting. The substance is short: use it freely, do not attack it, do not republish the writing as your own, and verify anything important.

Everything else on this page elaborates on those four points, mostly because certain situations genuinely warrant explicit mention — medical dosing, structural loads, customs declarations — and it would be evasive to leave them implied.

Proportionate Verification

The most practical advice in these terms is not a legal clause at all. It is this: match the amount of checking you do to the consequences of being wrong.

Low stakes

Converting a suitcase weight, a recipe quantity or a gym plate. Use the number, get on with your day. If it were wrong you would notice, and nothing irreversible depends on it.

Moderate stakes

Commercial shipping weights, product specifications, quotations. Convert here, then sanity-check the magnitude and confirm the unit is labelled everywhere it appears. Most errors at this level are unit errors rather than arithmetic errors.

High stakes

Medication doses, structural load calculations, regulatory declarations, anything with a safety or legal consequence. Use the appropriate professional process, with the verification and sign-off that process requires. A free web page is a useful cross-check within such a process and should never be the whole of it.

None of this is a lack of confidence in the arithmetic, which is exact. It is a recognition that the number is only one input into a decision, and that serious decisions deserve more than one source.

Why the Formula Is Always Published

Every page on this site states the conversion factor and the standard it comes from. That is partly educational and partly a matter of accountability: a tool that shows its working can be checked, and a tool that can be checked does not require you to extend it trust it has not earned.

Changes and Continuity

The conversion factors, by contrast, will not be revised, because they are not ours to revise. The pound has been exactly 0.45359237 kilograms since 1959 and there is no mechanism by which that would quietly change.

The Difference Between the Tool and the Decision

Almost every clause on this page reduces to one distinction, and it is worth stating directly: this site performs a calculation, it does not make a decision.

Deciding whether your suitcase will be accepted, whether a dose is appropriate, whether a beam will carry a load, or whether a customs declaration is complete — those are judgements involving context we do not have. Ask first

Republishing substantial written sections elsewhere. Translating pages. Including our explanatory content in a commercial product or publication. We are not difficult about these, but we would like to know and to check the result is accurate.

Not acceptable

Copying pages wholesale to another domain. Presenting our writing as your own. Implying partnership, endorsement or affiliation that does not exist. Automated bulk copying of the content for republication.

The underlying reasoning is simple. Facts and standard-derived values belong to everybody. The particular way we explained them took work, and that part is ours.

Availability, Changes and Endings

The site is provided without any uptime commitment, which is the honest position for a free resource. In practice it is a static site with very few moving parts, which is about as reliable as web hosting gets, but reliability in practice is not the same as a guarantee in principle.

Pages may be revised, merged or retired as the library develops. Where a page is removed, we aim to redirect it somewhere useful rather than leave a dead link, because broken references are a poor way to treat anyone who bookmarked something.

If you depend on a figure

Keep your own record of it. Any external resource can change, move or disappear, and anything load-bearing in your own work should not rest on a third party's continued existence.
