Calculators Converter+ builds free, browser-based unit converters and the explanatory content around them. Every conversion factor we publish traces back to a primary standard, every calculator is tested before release, and every page is written by a person rather than assembled from templates.

Who We Are

Calculators Converter+ is written and maintained by Alexander Flemings, with support from a small group of contributors who test the tools before they go live. The project began from a simple irritation: unit converters buried under advertising, locked behind sign-ups, or so thin on explanation that you had no way of judging whether the number was right.

Alexander's background is in software engineering and technical writing, and this site sits at the intersection of the two. Every calculator here was built rather than licensed, every conversion factor traced back to its defining standard rather than copied from another website, and every page written to be read by a person rather than assembled from a template. When you email the address at the bottom of this page, he is the one who reads it.

Our Editorial Standards

Every page is written for a reader who has never seen the formula before, because most of them have not. That means plain words, short sentences, and explanations that do the work rather than gesturing at it. We do not pad. If a question can be answered in one sentence, it gets one sentence.

We are also deliberate about what we do not do. Health pages convert units and give context; they do not offer medical advice, and they say so plainly. The same applies anywhere a reader might reasonably mistake general information for professional guidance. Being useful and being clear about your limits are the same discipline.

Writing that sounds like a person

Pages are drafted, edited and reviewed by people. We avoid the flat, repetitive register that makes reference sites tiring to read, and we vary structure between pages because a hundred identical articles help nobody — not readers, and not the search engines trying to work out which page actually answers a given question.

How We Check Accuracy

Conversion factors come from primary sources: the 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement, which fixed the pound at exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, and the SI definitions maintained by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures. We calculate our own reference tables from those constants rather than copying values from other sites, which prevents us inheriting somebody else's rounding error.

Each calculator goes through the same checks before publication. It is tested with known values in both directions. It is round-tripped — convert a figure, convert it back, confirm you land where you started. It is probed with awkward inputs: very small decimals, very large numbers, blank fields, negative values and text. And the page around it is read once more by someone who did not write it.

The calculation is the same throughout. The context is what changes, and the context is usually what you actually needed.

Independence and Funding

We do not sell your data, because we do not collect it. The calculators run locally in your browser and transmit nothing. We do not accept payment for favourable coverage, and where we link to an outside source it is because it is authoritative, not because of any arrangement. Each page carries exactly one external link, chosen on merit.

Why We Built It This Way

Three decisions shaped everything else about this site, and they were all made early.

The calculation happens on your device

We could have built the converter as a server-side service. It would have been easier to instrument, easier to analyse, and it would have meant every weight anybody entered travelled across the internet to us for no reason whatsoever. Running the arithmetic locally in your browser made the privacy policy short and the tool faster, which is a rare case of the right choice also being the convenient one.

The page explains itself

A converter that shows a number and nothing else asks you to trust it. We would rather show the formula, name the standard the constant comes from, and let you verify the result yourself if you want to. Most readers never will, and that is fine — but the option being there changes what kind of resource this is.

Context beats coverage

It would have been simpler to publish one converter page and stop. Instead the site has grown into a set of pages organised around situations, because the arithmetic is the easy part and the context is what people actually lack. Knowing that 23 kg is 50.71 lbs is useful. Knowing that this makes a 23 kg allowance slightly more generous than a 50 lb one, and that airport scales resolve to about 100 grams, is what stops you paying an excess fee.

Our Approach to Writing

Reference content has a characteristic failure mode: it becomes uniform. Every page opens the same way, every section carries the same heading, every explanation follows the same rhythm, and reading two of them in a row feels like reading a form. We work deliberately against that.

Pages differ in structure, not just in subject. Some open with a chart because that is what the reader wants first; others open with an explanation because the number means nothing without it. Headings are written for the page rather than pulled from a list. Where a subject genuinely warrants a shorter treatment, it gets one.

Plain words, on purpose

We write in short sentences and ordinary vocabulary, not because the subject is simple but because clarity is a courtesy. Someone reading a conversion page at eleven at night on a phone, trying to work out whether their suitcase is over, should not have to parse a subordinate clause to find the number.

Honest about limits

The most useful thing a reference site can do is be clear about where its usefulness ends. Health pages say plainly that they are not medical advice. Construction pages note that load ratings are a safety matter. Pages covering weight cutting in combat sport acknowledge the documented risks rather than treating the topic as pure arithmetic. Stating a limitation costs nothing and is the difference between being trustworthy and merely being confident.

Accessibility and Performance

Pages are built from plain HTML with a single stylesheet and a single script, both served from this domain. There are no web fonts to download, no framework to boot, no advertising auction happening before the content appears. The result loads quickly on a slow connection and works on old devices.

The light and dark theme toggle respects your operating system's preference by default and remembers your choice if you override it. Tables use proper table markup with headers, headings follow a logical hierarchy, and the calculator's fields carry real labels rather than placeholder text pretending to be labels.

What Comes Next

The weight and mass library is the current focus and will continue to deepen: more situational pages, finer reference tables, and better coverage of the contexts where conversion errors actually cause problems. Beyond that, the same approach applies to other measurement families where the arithmetic is simple and the context is not.

The Subject Itself: Why Weight Conversion Deserves a Whole Site

It is a fair question. The conversion is one multiplication. Why does that justify a hundred and twenty pages?

The answer is that unit errors are one of the more persistent categories of avoidable mistake in modern life, and they are almost never caused by people being unable to multiply. They are caused by ambiguity: a number without a unit, a field that accepts either, a document that switched systems halfway, a supplier quoting in pounds to a customer working in kilograms. The arithmetic is trivial and the failures are frequent, which tells you the problem was never arithmetic.

Aviation has lost aircraft to fuel quantity confusion between metric and imperial. Space missions have been lost to unit mismatches between engineering teams. Hospitals record weight in kilograms only, as a formal safety control, because pound-for-kilogram substitution in weight-based dosing is a recognised and serious error mode. These are not obscure edge cases; they are what happens when two measurement cultures share a workflow.

So the pages here cover the contexts, not just the constant. What the standard baggage limits actually are and how tightly they are enforced. Why shipping carriers bill on volumetric weight and round upward. Why paediatric practice never converts mid-calculation. Where a bushel weight differs by crop. That material is the part that is genuinely hard to find in one place, and it is the reason the site is bigger than its formula.

What we do when sources disagree

Sometimes they do, particularly on real-world figures like typical bag sizes or equipment ratings, which legitimately vary. In those cases we describe the range rather than inventing a false precision, and we say where the variation comes from. A page that tells you empty suitcases weigh between 3.5 and 5.5 kg is more useful than one that confidently asserts 4.2.

What we do when we do not know

We leave it out. Filling a gap with a confident guess is how reference sites become unreliable, and once a reader catches one invented figure they are right to distrust everything else on the page.

A Note on Search Engines and AI Assistants

A lot of people now reach a page like this through an AI assistant rather than a search result, or never reach the page at all because the assistant answered directly. We think that is fine, provided the answer it gives is correct.

So the pages are written to be quotable: the key figure stated plainly near the top, the formula written out explicitly, units labelled everywhere, and claims phrased so they remain true when lifted out of context. If a reader gets the right answer from an assistant that read this page and never visits us, the page still did its job.

What we will not do is write for machines at the expense of people. Content stuffed with repeated phrases to game a ranking is worse for both audiences, and a page that reads like it was assembled rather than written is exactly the kind of thing readers and search systems alike have learned to discount.

How a Page Gets Made

For anyone curious about the process, here is what happens between deciding a page should exist and publishing it.

1. Establish the real question

Every page starts from a situation rather than a keyword. Somebody is standing somewhere with a number in the wrong unit. Working out where they are standing determines everything else: what context they need, which figures matter, and what they already know.

2. Gather the domain facts

The conversion is the easy half. The other half is the surrounding reality — the standard limits, the typical weights, the equipment ratings, the thresholds that trigger a fee or a refusal. These are checked against widely published norms, and where they legitimately vary we say so rather than picking one and asserting it.

3. Compute, never transcribe

Every table is generated from the exact factor. Nobody types a conversion value by hand, because hand-typed tables acquire errors and those errors then propagate to everyone who copies them.

4. Write it for a person

Drafted in plain language, structured around what the reader needs first rather than a fixed template, and with the key figure stated early so anyone in a hurry can leave immediately with the right answer.

5. Check, then check differently

Numerical verification against the standard, a round-trip test of the calculator, and a read-through by someone who did not write the page. The last of these catches the things the first two cannot: explanations that make sense only to the person who already understood them.

Do you give medical advice?

No. Health-related pages convert units and provide general context only. Anything affecting treatment, dosing or diagnosis belongs with a qualified clinician.

Reference values calculated from a public standard are not ours to restrict. The written explanations around them are our work, so link rather than republish.

Do you accept guest posts?

No. Everything is written in-house so we can stand behind it.

Why does each page have only one external link?
